Chavez wins.
Related to country: Venezuela

Well, no more to say to that, except hello socialism, bye democracy.

There was an air of despair around everyone I talked to. Mom didn't take it so well. A lot of people in my family are shocked and angry. Now, a day later, everyone just gave up. My brothers think dad is going to send them to the US to scape the regime the president is establishing.

Thankfully the country didn't go up in flames thanks to one side wining over another. There was a lot of fear and tension, people thinking that a civil war was going to be started, that blood was going to run.

Pretty sad.

Chavez wins
Hello socialism, bye democracy. From what I gather Hugo Chavez was democratically elected whereas if your dad sends your brothers to the US they won't be going to a country with a democratically leader. Unless of course the problem is a Socialist 'Regime' Vs a Capitalist Regime. Because it seems to me that for anyone not wanting to live in a socialist country where the President nationalizes resources and promotes Co-ops well then where better to go than the poster child for capitalism the US.

Socialism in theory, works. Just like communism.
Sadly, Chavez, regardless of how amazing his ideas are, is a power-hungry president with an absurdly skewed view of the situation of Venezuela. He's a leader that does not have touch with the reality of things.

Yeah its amazing that resources are nationalized and co-ops are promoted; but its not amazing when jobs are given to foreigners (ie: professionals imported from Cuba) instead of the million of unemployed Venezuelans. Its also not amazing to have to pay 10 times the price of a nationalized product like sugar --and that's if you actually find a place selling it.

You know what's also really crappy? the fact that the national assembly is willing to pass a law giving the president free reign over what laws get made, because as they said "we all here follow our president". How is positive change supposed to happen in societies if the people representing that society are willing to give their power to make change?

I don't agree with you when you claim to say that Chavez was elected democratically. Because when he was democratically elected in 1998, he promised the country to be a leader to its people. The only thing he's done successfully is divide them.

In the last 10 years all I've seen is anger, blame, guilt. Chavez does that very well, just like Bush. There is now anger between people in a culture that was always united. He's intimidated those that don't believe in his revolution. How is that fair?

And you know what, I agree with you when it comes to your views for the US. But see, the point of my blog was that my dad wanted to send the kids away before it was not possible to do so. Where he sends them is just a matter of logistics. It could very well he sends them here, to Canada, where I've been living for the past 7 years.

And one last thing, sometimes its necessary to understand what people have gone through to understand the reasons they do things. Idealism doesn't always work. Because what your ideals are for a socialist country, is just life for my family.

As I said, in theory it works. According to 40% of people that voted against Chavez in December, it does not.

PS: sorry for the long rant. :o) hope this shows you where I'm coming from.
